At RD Weis one of our top priorities is advocating
for sustainable flooring products and environmentally responsible
services. Our company-wide protocol encourages reclamation
and reuse, and specifying green products whenever possible.
So we focus on creative ways to minimize energy consumption
and keep landfills free of used or outdated carpet.
Almost 75 percent of all new carpet purchases are to replace
existing carpet. Which means that for every square yard of
carpet installed there’s a square yard that has to be
thrown out. In fact estimates indicate that between 3.5 and
4 billion pounds of carpet are discarded every year.
The growing issue of solid disposal, which is leading to
ever-increasing landfill costs and regulations, has shown
the flooring industry that there is a clear market advantage
to making changes to its manufacturing practices to recycle
carpet and to produce carpet of recycled materials.
"Green" or sustainable floor coverings that offer
the benefits of recycling capability include stone, ceramic,
palm, bamboo, cork and, of course, lumber, rubber and carpet.
If your old carpet is starting to look worn or outdated,
and you’ve been thinking about installing brand-new
carpet, we urge you consider one of our reclamation programs.
We can clean and renew the color and design of your used carpet
with amazing results! We ship the carpet to our facility where
thorough cleaning, and texture and fiber rejuvenation are
performed. Then we restyle it using contemporary designs and
colors and, finally, reinstall it as "new" carpet.
These reclamation programs eliminate skyrocketing landfill
charges for disposal, reduce environmental liability posed
by unnecessary solid waste, and result in the look of new
carpeting at about half the cost of new carpet replacement.
Modular carpet tiles offer several cost-saving and waste
prevention advantages. Individual carpet tiles can easily
be replaced when they become stained or worn. This not only
reduces the cost of repair/replacement, but it also drastically
minimizes the amount of carpeting destined for recycling or
disposal.
In addition to reclamation programs, carpet recycling alternatives
include recycling into new carpet face fiber, manufacturing
fibers into other plastic products, recycling carpet backing
into new backing, or producing a recycled-content carpet backing
by melting different types of backing and fiber materials
together.
